Rapid eye movement phase — the dreaming period. Plays a key role in emotional regulation, procedural memory, and creative thinking. Normal range is 20–25% of total sleep. Alcohol and some medications (SSRIs) suppress REM. REM deficit is linked to increased anxiety.
