Interval Walking (Japanese Walking)
Lifestyle Easy 28 days oura
Start the Health OS protocol "Interval Walking (Japanese Walking)" (lifestyle-interval-walking) and show me today's step.
Goal
Assess how interval walking (3 min fast / 3 min slow) affects resting heart rate and HRV
Hypothesis
5 sets of 3+3 min, 4 times a week → higher aerobic fitness → lower resting heart rate, higher HRV
Interval walking training (IWT) from the Shinshu University protocol raised peak aerobic capacity by 9% over 5 months and lowered resting systolic BP more than continuous walking at the same pace (Nemoto et al. 2007)
Expected Effects
- ↓ resting_hr
- ↑ hrv_night_avg
Phases
1
Baseline
7 days- Walk as usual, no intervals
- At the end of the week, log the number of sessions (usually 0)
2
Interval Walking
21 days- 5 sets: 3 min at a fast pace (can't hold a conversation easily) + 3 min slow (can talk freely) = 30 min
- At least 4 days a week
- Set a 3-min phone timer — switch pace on the signal, use the talk test rather than a heart rate target
- At the end of each week, log the number of sessions
Tracked Metrics
Primary
- ↓ Resting Heart Rate
- ↑ hrv_night_avg
Secondary
Evaluation
Method: compare_phase_means
Design: baseline (7 days) → intervention (21 days)
Safety
Disclaimers
- Interval walking is moderate-intensity exercise, suitable for most people
- On blood-pressure medication or beta-blockers — check the pace with a doctor
- With joint injuries — shorten the fast phase or choose softer ground
Stop Conditions
- Chest pain or shortness of breath disproportionate to the effort
- An injury that prevents walking
- Oura readiness < 60 for three days in a row (overtraining)
